Traffic police start enforcing Supreme Court ruling

Mangalore, May 16, 2012 : The traffic police began removing sun films from windows of vehicles, free of charge, on May 15, Tuesday, in a move to implement the Supreme Court ruling of April 27, 2012, which prohibits adding of sun films on windows of vehicles according to the Indian Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules Act of 1989.

Traffic police department sources say that the traffic police removed sun films for free after the Mangalore police commissioner directed them to start enforcing the rule.

Prathap Reddy, the inspector general of police for western range, had also issued a press release giving information about the rule.


According to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules Act, windscreens and rear window glasses of vehicles must have 70 percent visibility and the side window glasses must have 50 percent visibility.
