Mangalore, May 7, 2013: The people of Dakshina Kannada might have been disappointed when they saw SSLC results on Monday. However, the disappointment was made up with an announcement of PUC results, with the district securing second position in the overall percentage.
Akshaya Kamath, the state topper in science stream hails from the port city. A student of Canara PU College, Mangalore, Akshay has scored a total of 594, (99 percent) in PCME. He has secured 100 each in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Electronics and Sanskrit and 94 in English.
Akshay said that he is on cloud nine. ‘I saw my name on TV and I was excited.”
“I had taken up coaching in Expert Coaching Centre, and this helped me a lot. The teachers at Canara PU College also guided me throughout the year, “he said.
“I became more confident to face PU exams, after the preparatory exam at Canara PU College. The exam was difficult, but I fared well, “he said.
Akshay who dreams on pursuing Engineering is yet to select his engineering stream. “I am waiting for the AIEEE results to select the Engineering College. I hope to get into NITK, Suratkal,” he said.
Akshay is the son of K Umesh Kamath, Manager at Canara Bank, at Kuntikan branch and Jayashree Kamath, an employee of Indian Bank.
“I am a very happy and proud of my son. It is his hard work and grace of God helped him to achieve success,” said an excited Umesh Kamath.
Ashish Padiyar, a student of Expert PU College who scored 98.1 percent is excited over his results. Ashish has scored 100 each in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics.
He has scored 93 in English, 96 in Sanskrit and a total of 589. Ashish is the son of Bank of India employees, Ashok and Shobha Padiyar and lives in Mannagudda.
“I used to study daily and put in more efforts during exams. I want to pursue my engineering in Electronics and Communication. I am hopeful to get a good CET rank,” said Padiyar.
“Apart from studying, I enjoy painting and playing tabala,” he said.
Topper in commerce
Happiness knew no bound for Suraj Hegde, II PUC state topper in Commerce, for whom topping the state was important to bring laurels not only to his parents and college but also more importantly to his village.
Suraj Hegde, a resident of Borkatte village in Karkala taluk and a student of Alva’s College Moodbidri, has topped the State in Commerce section with 593 (98.8 pc) marks. He has scored 100 in all the four subjects-accountancy, business studies, statistics and basic mathematics, while he secured 98 in Sanskrit and 95 in English.
An excited Suraj Hegde gave credit to his parents and the institutions where he studied, for helping him to succeed.
“I was not so confident of becoming the State topper, but my parents always used to insist me to become the topper so as to bring name to our village. A very few students from village background become toppers in PUC exams and they wanted me to become one.” His father Santhosh Hegde is a senior assistant in National Insurance, Moodbidri and his mother Prasanna Hegde is an assistant in Head Post Office in Karkala.
When asked the secret behind his success, Suraj said “I used to study for about two hours daily and was studying for five to six hours during study holidays. As I am interested in sports, I never missed playing. Playing helped me to refresh my mind.”
He is also an avid stamp collector. Having completed his II PUC with flying colors, Suraj is now preparing to write Common Proficiency Test exams in June.
