Surathkal: Pregnant minor dies by suicide; youth booked under POCSO

Surathkal, Jun 25, 2026: A tragic incident has come to light in Surathkal, where a 17-year-old pregnant girl died by suicide at her home on June 23. Following her death, the Surathkal police registered a case against a local youth, identifying him as Aneesh Poojary, under the POCSO Act, rape, and abetment to suicide.

According to police sources, the minor (whose identity has been protected under the pseudonym ’Nisha’) left behind a suicide note expressing regret over a "mistake" and stating that the accused "is happy." The note also alleged that despite the accused’s association with local Hindu organizations, no assistance was offered to her during her distress.

The victim’s parents lodged a formal complaint late that evening, revealing that Nisha was pregnant and had been sexually assaulted by Aneesh Poojary under the false pretext of marriage.

An FIR was registered early on June 24. Following the post-mortem, medical authorities collected foetal samples for DNA profiling to secure forensic evidence. The accused is currently absconding, and a dedicated police team has been formed to track him down.
