St Ann’s institutions take out peace rally to condemn Sowmya killing

Mangalore< March 6, 2013 : The St Ann’s institutions took out a peace rally on March 5, Tuesday to condemn the brutal murder of 22 year old Sowmya, an alumnus of the institution. Sowmya hailing from Baltila in Kalladka was killed last month after a vain bid to outrage her modesty. She had completed her D.Ed from St Ann’s institution.A silent prayer was also held in memory of the departed soul.
Speaking on the occasion, CWC Chairperson Asha Nayak said women should raise voice against injustice and continue their fight against atrocities and crime against women. Probably, it may be the failure of our system that has led to rise in crime against women, Nayak said.
She also urged the society to help victims of crime against women overcome the trauma which they had undergone. The victims need the support of their families and the society, she said.
She also cited the Vishaka judgement with regard to the case of Bhanwari Devi, a potter from Bhateri who fought against atrocities and could finally win a long drawn battle Sr Edna Furtado, Secretary of the Apostolic Carmel Education Society, Karnataka Province and Dr Sr Lydia Fernandes, Joint Secretary were present among others.
The rally which began from the college campus passed through Corporation Bank Circle, AB Shetty Circle and State Bank Road before returning to the campus.
