Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Jan 21, 2013: “There is a need for society to look at things beyond the caste perspectives as done by Sharanas like Basavanna and Ambigara Chaudayya whose thoughts and literature advocated  a life beyond casteism,” said noted scholar Amritha Someshwara.

He was  speaking as a chief guest at a programme organised in Mangalore on January 21, Monday as part of Ambigara Chowdayya Jayanthi. The function was jointly  organised by District Administration, DK Zilla Panchayat, Department of Kannada and Culture   and Mogaveera Vyavasthapaka Mandali, Mangalore.

Continuing, Amritha Someshwara said  the exponents of Vachana literature were  involved in a social revolution against caste system. He said Vachana writers including Ambigara Chaudayya always tried to communicate with people in a simple language, bringing them closer to the masses.

K Dayananda, Additional Deputy Commissioner, who also spoke, said the Vachana literature of Ambigara Chaudayya did not attain popularity as that of Basavanna though both were contemporaries.

Dr KN Vijayaprakash, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer, Dr Harish Kumar, MCC Commissioner, Lalaji Mendon, Kaup MLA, Nitin Kumar, Chairman of Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation and others were present.
