Six-day ceasefire on combing operation against Naxals ends today

Mangalore, Sept. 23, 2012: The six-day ceasefire announced by the Government of Karnataka on combing operation against Naxals will end today at 6:00p.m.

Naxal ceasefireCM Jagadish Shettar had announced that the ANF and the local police should stop combing operations against the Naxals and give them an opportunity to surrender. Alok Kumar, inspector general of police (ANF) and Abhishek Goyal, superintendent of police, said that their seniors will chalk out plans against Naxals after the ceasefire.

Calling it a “wait and watch situation,” Alok Kumar said that the ANF will announce its next course of action on Monday after discussing the Naxal issue with the state police.

He also confirmed that no Naxal has come forward to surrender, adding that the district police will analyze the situation once the ceasefire comes to an end and then make plans for the immediate fuure.

Regarding the press release issued by Gangadhar of the state committee of the Communist Party of India (CPI), in which the police were criticized for the encounter death of Yellappa, he said that this release was sent on September 8. He said that the press release was issued after the Cheru incident in which renegades condemned the use of force by the ANF to crush the Maoist movement. Stating that the police had arrested Gangadhar in 2009, he said that the Naxals are using the same name while communicating with the media.
