Mangalore, Dec 1: Silk Mark Expo 2009, a week-long event organized by the Bangalore Chapter of Silk Mark Organization of India (SMOI) in collaboration with the Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, was inaugurated at TMA Pai International Convention Centre on Dec 1, Tuesday. 

Kripa Alva, the advisor of the Airport Authority, inaugurated the expo, and said that Mangalore is highly aware of fashion trends. The people of the city widely use silk for all special occasions. Silk is also considered to be sacred fabric.

Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj launched the Silk Mark Expo 2009 and said that all women wear silk sarees at least once in their lives. Silk is strongly associated with wealth, he remarked. 

S Sukumar Menon, the CEO of SMOI, said that India is the largest producer of silk with more than 6 million people working in the silk industry. He informed that 90 percent of the silk produced in the country is used by women. 

He also said that the expo will be organized in different cities in order to promote silk products and also to create awareness on the qualities of pure silk. 

T D Koshi, the inspection member of Vanya Silk, made the welcome speech.
