Udupi, June 13, 2018: Shiroor Lakshmivaratheertha Swami laid the foundation for the Music Academy and other development works in Shiroor moola mutt.

Shiroor.

He said Shiroor and the nearby areas do not have a PU college. The students have to travel far to pursue their studies. A college will come up in Shiroor shortly. He said, “A 15-acre land belonging to Shiroor Mutt has been handed over to Samvedana Foundation of Malpe. Percussionist Shivamani’s music academy and a gaushala will come up.”

Samvedana member Prakash said, “Shiroor seer promised to hand over the land for afforestation activities. Accordingly, the Foundation will take up an afforestation drive in the said land. Variety of saplings will be planted. Priority will be given to fruit-bearing plants that help birds.”

Sivamani said that he has faith in the Shiroor seer. “The Music Academy will come up on a 4-acre land. The work will be completed in the next three years.” The school will teach Indian traditional Carnatic ‘taals’, along with the Western style of drums. It will also focus on the cultural exchange of Indian and Western music. He will leave for the US and visit his favourite music college — the Percussive Arts Society (PAS) there.

“I will talk to them (PAS) and try to establish a link with the music school, which we will establish here. We will train students here and later send them for training in PAS and to participate in their music festivals. It will be like a ‘Gurukula.”
