Seminar on foreign contributions to classical Kannada held

Mangalore, March 20, 2012 : The Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) Mysore, the Centre for Classical Kannada, and the Karnataka Theological Research Institute (KATHRI) jointly organized a 2-day seminar titled “Classical Language Kannada: Foreign Scholars’ Contributions” on March 20 in Sahodaya Hall.

Speaking about inaugurating the seminar, Dr. Venkatachala Shastri, the senior researcher and professor emeritus, said that European scholars took the help of Kannada writers and did not acknowledge their contributions, but B. L. Rice and Kittel noted the contributions of local writers.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Purushottama Bilimale, the director of American Institute for Indian Studies, said that Rs. 28 crore was provided for research on Tamil classical literature, but no scholar has shown interest in it. Noting that Rs. 15 crore has been provided for Kannada language research, he said that young people need to show interest in it.

Dr. Venkatachala Shastri released Govinda Pai Niganthu, written by Prof. A. V. Navada, on this occasion.

Dr. B. A. Vivek Rai, the professor of Wuersburg University of Germany, presided; Dr. R. Subba Krishna, the professor and deputy director of CIIL, delivered the introductory address; Dr. H. R. Cabral, the chairman of KATHRI, delivered the welcome address; and Dr. Sadananda, the director of KATHRI, delivered the vote of thanks.
