Mangalore, Jan 13, 2013: The SCDCC Bank, in an act of kind gesture, felicitated Shivaram, the driver of the Yeshwanthpur-Kannur Express, whose presence of mind had saved over the lives of over a thousand passengers, after the train derailed on January 4 near Sakleshpur.
Shivaram was honored by Oscar Fernandes, Rajya Sabha Member, MN Rajendra Kumar, SCDCC Bank Chairman and Matti Lakshminarayana Rao who was travelling in the train when it met with the mishap.
Speaking on the occasion, MN Rajendra Kumar said the programme was organised to commend and recognize the efforts of Shivaram and to express gratitude to him.
Oscar Fernandes who too spoke, was all praise for Shivaram and said there have been two other similar incidents in the past when tragedies had been averted due to presence of mind of the drivers.
Shivaram who recollected the January 4 incident said he applied sudden brakes on realizing that there was a sudden shift and downward movement by the train when it was inside the tunnel.
Naveen Kumar Soorinje, Vice President of SCDCC Bank, Sudhir Hegde, Raju Poojari, Railway officials and Rohan Monteiro,MD of Rohan Corporation were present.
