Mangaluru, Dec 24, 2014:  In a shocking incident, retired Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police Narayana Maniyani who was also the recipient of President’s Medal for meritorious service,  was found hanging  from the ceiling fan of the room of a lodge at Tokkottu on December 23, Tuesday night. The  reason that drew the retired cop to suicide is not yet known. It has been gathered that he  has not left behind any death note.

Sources informed that Maniyani had hired a room at the Hotel Vrindavan at Tokkottu on Tuesday evening. It is learnt, he had arrived by a car and had alighted at Kolya asking his driver to get in touch with him at 10 pm. However, when the driver tried his number at 10 pm as asked, the number was not-reachable and  on gathering information that Maniyani had hired a room in the lodge, the driver rushed there along with Maniyani’s eldest son only to find that  the room was locked and Maniyani was not responding. The door was later broken open to find Maniyani hanging from the ceiling fan.

Police sources informed that he had used a newly bought rope to end his life. Though two paper sheets were found in the room they were blank.

Maniyani who was 65 years of age is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. It is learnt that he was into finance and chit fund business and  operated tourist vehicles. He had even ventured into the media by starting Daily News 10 TV news channel through Kural Media Pvt Ltd.Sources close him said he was depressed since a few days.

Narayana Maniyani who had served different police stations was instrumental in tracking the notorious criminal Ripper Chandran and also in busting several criminal cases.

Health Minister UT Khader and senior police officials have visited the spot and offered condolences to the family of the deceased cop.
