Mangalore, July 9, 2012: Poet Gulzar delivered a lecture on poetry at a program organized by Kavita Trust in Mangalore on July 8, Sunday.
Revealing his opinions on poetry, he said that poetry is more about feeling than about calculation or science. Stating that one cannot bind poetry with rhythm, rhymes, musical sense, meter, and others, he said that poetry can easily merge or overlap with other media and form songs, paintings, prose, rhythm, and so on.
Speaking about prose poetry, Gulzar said that many times prose in novels appears poetic. However, in poetry, the poet hides behind his/her poem, owing to which the poem can be interpreted in several ways unlike in prose where the meaning is quite evident.
Sharing personal experiences, Mr. Gulzar said that he has to write more lyrics now because of the rising demand for lyrics in the film industry. Speaking about his lyrics Kajraare and Beedi Jalaile, he said that, while penning lyrics for movies, one must write according to the character in the movie.
