Mangalore, Feb 5, 2013  : Rahul Gandhi is the one and only hope of India. His words touches many hearts in the country, said Maheshwari, All India Women’s Congress Vice President.


She was speaking after inaugurating the Dakshina Kannada District Women’s Congress Convention  at Town Hall on Feb 5, Tuesday. She said the Congress Party was gifted with selfless leaders like Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. The Indian National Congress is not only a political movement but   also a people’s movement, she observed.

Claiming that the Congress was responsible for initiating various developmental programmes in the country, she alleged that the BJP which was in power for six years failed to do any significant work towards the welfare of women and minorities. Maheshwari called upon women  to take active interest in politics and elections.


 Senior Congress leader and former union minister B Janardhan Poojary, said women who are subject to oppression right from birth to death, must fight against it on their own.


On the BJP’s claim that it could achieve what the Congress could not do in 60 years, Poojari said the people are aware of the BJP achievement in the field of corruption. “ BJP is the only government which resorted to black magic at  Vidhan Soudha, Poojari alleged.


Poojary urged the women members of the party  to go on a  door to door campaign for Congress  to bring about a change in the mindset of the people who, he said have been brainwashed by BJP Poojari was also highly critical of the recent statement of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat that women must confine themselves to their homes.


Poojari chose to ask Bhagwat if he wanted to see women politicians like  Shiela Dixit, Sushma Swaraj, Uma Bharathi and Shobha Karandlaje sit back at home and cook for  their families.


Manjula Naidu, President, Karnataka Women’s Congress presided over the function. AICC Secretary Vinay Kumar Sorake, District Congress President B Ramanatha Rai, Legislators Abhayachandra Jain and U T Khader were the guest of honour.


MCC Mayor Gulzar Banu, AICC Secretary Geetha, former MP BK Thara Devi and Tejaswini Gowda, Women’s Congress state Vice President Sarala Kanchan, Udupi Women’s Congress district President Veronika and KPCC Secretary Shyamala Bhandary participated as the chief guests.


Senior Congress members felicitated 16 woman Congress activists from  16 blocks of the Congress with shawl and memento.


Mamatha Gatty, District Women’s Congress President, welcomed the guests and gathering.


Congress women leaders Kripa Amar Alva, B N Bharathi, Hilda Alva, Yashavanthi Alva and others were present.
