Mangalore, Sep 14, 2013 : If the death penalty imposed on Delhi gang rapists by a fast track court on September 13, Friday has made the nation heave a sigh of relief, Dakshina Kannada too feels it has contributed its bit to ensure that justice was done in the case.
A doctor hailing from Puttur Dr Ashith B Acharya who heads the dental forensic science laboratory at SDM College, Dharwad, had assisted the investigating agencies in conclusively establishing the involvement of the culprits in the case.
The College at Sattur in Dharward is the only college in the nation having a Department of Forensic Odontology and State-of-the-art dental forensic laboratory.
The tests at the lab by Dr Acharya were able to link bite marks on the victim’s body with the dental models of the accused Ram Singh and Akshay Thakur. While passing the judgement, the Delhi court also relied on the report sent by the laboratory at the dental college.
The Court had accepted the 12 page detailed analysis report submitted by the laboratory and took it into cognizance while passing the judgement.
In fact the authorities had maintained top secret about the tests being undertaken in the institution and except the Principal of the College and Dr Acharya, none were aware of the reason behind the visit of he Special investigation Official form Delhi to the Hospital.
