Puttur: Theft accused re-arrested after six years of absconding, fresh case filed

Puttur, Aug 2, 2025: Police have re-arrested a man who had been on the run for six years after securing bail in a theft case. A new case has also been filed against him for flouting court orders.


Theft case


The accused, Mohammad Hanif (55) of Somwarpet, Madikeri, had been granted bail in 2018 in connection with Puttur Town Police Station Crime No. 35/2001 under IPC Sections 379 and 34. However, he failed to attend subsequent court hearings and went absconding.

He was traced and arrested from Kushalnagar in Kodagu district. Following his repeated non-appearance and violation of court directives, Puttur Town Police registered a fresh case against him under Section 269 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He was produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody.
