Mangalore, Oct 5, 2012 : The proposal for the construction of an air cargo complex at Mangalore Airport has now reached the higher authorities, who will soon issue a notification in this regard.

Commissioner of Customs D. Purushottam made the above announcement at a program organized in the premises of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on Thursday. Admitting that custom officials are guilty of harassing air passengers in airports, Mr. Purushottam said that black sheep exist in all departments and the customs department is not an exception. He said that passengers can either approach him or the grievance redressal cell established in his office, he said.

Speaking about baggage rules, he said that jewelry worth Rs. 10,000 for male passengers and Rs. 20,000 for female passengers is allowed free. Valuables excluding jewelry worth up to Rs. 35,000 is allowed free of duty for passengers aged 10 and above and up to Rs. 15,000 for passengers below 10 years. 

One laptop is permitted duty free for people aged 18 and above. Indian passengers coming back home from abroad can carry up to Rs. 7,500 and foreign currency has been brought under the “without limit” category although passengers are required to declare in the currency declaration form in case the value exceeds US$5,000 or equals it.

Customs duty is to be paid in convertible foreign currency, he added.
