Producer societies to be launched to address farmer problems – Moily

Mangalore, Mar 4, 2012: Addressing the gathering at the golden jubilee celebration of the Canara Organization for Development and Peace (CODP) held at Milagres today, Veerappa Moily, the union corporate affairs minister, said that only producer societies can change the fact that only 6 percent of farm products are currently processed. He added that the ministry of corporate affairs has a new scheme to create producer societies with the power to assign value to farm products. 


Revealing more details about producer societies, he said that they will be smaller than cooperative societies and will be registered under the Companies Act. He opined that these societies can work wonders in eliminating farmer problems all over the country.

Speaking on the occasion, Rev. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, the bishop of Mangalore Diocese, said that economic growth has led to inequality and that hunger and discrimination against certain sections of society is on the rise. 


A number of self-help groups were felicitated on this occasion in recognition of their achievements. Members of over 100 self-help groups had participated in this event. 


Fr. Frederick D’Souza, the head of the Bangalore unit of Caritas and the executive director – designate of Caritas India, and Dr. Rita Noronha, the social worker, were also present.
