He said that the police department has organized drug awareness campaigns at Panambur Beach, in malls, and at Ullal Beach.

Stating that the police department has a monitoring unit, he said that this unit will trace people involved in drug smuggling based on information volunteered by the public.

Speaking about the workshop, he said that the resource persons will speak on the different types of drugs and how to identify them. He urged police officers to take this chance of improving their knowledge and then use the knowledge to check drug abuse, drug smuggling, and other drug-related crimes.

The resource persons were Pankaj Dwivedi of the Bangalore Narcotic Department and Venugopal G., the superintendent.

Karan – Arjun to join battle against drugs

The city police have acquired two male Labrador Retrievers to help them fight the drug menace in the city. Called Karan and Arjun, these dogs have been trained at the City Armed Reserve of the Bangalore police and arrived at the commissionerate on March 20 Tuesday thanks to a union government move of sanctioning two such dogs for every range.

The dogs have been trained for 11 months at Adugodi. Their trainers Sadashiv and Raviraj say that these dogs have been given basic obedience training for 6 months and drug sniffing training for 5 months.  They are capable of sniffing out narcotics even if they are buried 3ft under the ground and are expected to sniff out hiding places of drug peddlers in Mangalore.

Currently, the dogs are tired after their long journey and do not seem happy about the high temperature of Mangalore.
