Mangalore, Oct 31, 2012: Victims of astrologer Kalmadi Jagannath Joshi of Thokkottu, who allegedly provides astrological advice and cheats people of their property, under the leadership of JD(S) leader M. Addressing reporters who were waiting outside the Mangalore Police Commissionerate today, Mr. Hegde said that Joshi offers door-to-door pooja services to help people solve their problems, borrows their gold ornaments and other valuables, and never returns them.

One of his victims, relating his tale of woe, said that Joshi had acquired his property by making false promises. Allegedly, Joshi had him sign an agreement and took custody of the papers of his house in Shaktinagar, assuring him that he will build another house for him and bear the rent expenses for him till then. But Joshi is neither paying the rent nor constructing the house, and when asked about it, he uses harsh words and threatens him, he said.

Hegde also told reporters of how Joshi duped Aitha of Thokkottu, a member of the SC/ST communities. Joshi forged Aitha’s ownership documents and got his property transferred to his wife’s name, after which he sold it to a local BJP leader Chandrashekar Uchil. As a result, Uchil now owns SC/ST land, which according to law ought not to be transferred to a non SC/ST party. This shows that Joshi has the support of government officers and politicians, he said.

The victims urged the Mangalore police commissioner to investigate Joshi and appoint an officer to investigate the activities of the entire family, including his wife Rathnavathi, his sons Ganesh and Chandrashekar, and Geetha Suvarna and Harish Suvarna, who are also involved in illegal activities.

DCP Mutturaya accepted the memorandum on behalf of the police commissioner.
