Police arrest conman who cheated 7 elderly people

Mangalore, Oct 10, 2012: The Bunder police arrested a man on Oct 10, Wednesday on grounds of cheating elderly people of their pension money.

The arrested is Gilbert John Vas alias Gilbert (47) of Manchi Kolnad in Bantwal, who allegedly cheated 7 elderly people. The Bunder police have registered a total of 5 cases against him, the Kadri police have registered one case, and the Pandeshwar police have registered one case.

His victims are Valerian D’Souza of Tannir Bhavi, Juliana D’Souza of Padil, Theresa Noronha of Hoigebazaar, Sesamma Kanchila of Bantwal, Veronica D’Souza of Neermarga, Lousie D’Souza of Padua, and Leelavathi Gurpur.

The accused promised them that he would provide pensions, after which he would take them to unknown places and ask them to put all their valuables in a bag by telling them that they will not get pensions if found with the valuables. He would even take money from them for the application forms and then disappear with their valuables.

He used the same method to rob Valerian of Rs. 1,800, a gold chain, a ring, and a dual sim mobile phone, which he immediately switched off, on May 2. However, the police tracked him when he switched the phone on again.

The police have seized 102gms of gold from him. He used to sell the gold he stole from his victims at low prices to Sona Bankers. The police have also registered a case against Sona Bankers.
