According to the police, it is required to obtain 24 hours prior permission for organizations to assemble anywhere in the city. However, Advocate Dinesh Ulapadi said that they had sought the permission from the Police in the morning and there was no objection made till 5pm in the evening. Hence, the group felt that the permission is granted. “In the absence of any objection, it was deemed permitted” said Dinesh Ulappadi.

“It was a peaceful assembly of citizens of Mangalore from all walks of life to bring awareness about the recent attack on students at the Homstay in Padil and warn the anti-social elements that the people of Mangalore will not keep quite any more” said Vijayanath Shetty, businessman and philanthropist. “We will continue our five days program as planned till August 21” he added.

Earlier, addressing the public, Dinesh Ulepady, Mangalore-based advocate, said that anybody can protest without getting a police permit, adding that members of the public are protesting in a public place. He challenged the police to arrest the protestors, but refused to cancel the protest.

Among those arrested were Gurudutt and Vijay Kumar, victims of the Mangalore home stay attack.
