Mangalore Dec 20, 2012 : Human rights violations in the nation will continue as long as poverty prevails in the society, said Dr PL Dharma, Head of the Department of Political Science of Mangalore University.
He was delivering the inaugural address of a national level seminar on ‘Human Rights Advocacy : A Step to Prevent Human Rights Violations,’ in Mangalore on December 19, Wednesday. The seminar was jointly organized by the SDM College of Business Management and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Mangalore.
He said poverty and caste systems are to be blamed for many cases of human rights violations, while generally it is the police and the government which are blamed for the same.
Continuing, he said the situation in India is such that many a time human rights activists are labeled as Naxalites. At the same time he regretted the fact that religion factor is used as a tool to violate human rights in our region. He said peace can prevail in the society only when efforts are made to protect human rights.
Ajay Kumar K, Chief of the Business Administration Department of Mallik Dinar College of Pharmacy, Kasargod, Ashok Ariga of Mangalore Bar Association, Dr Devaraj K, Principal of SDM College of Business Management and others were present on the occasion.
