Mangalore, Oct 24: District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar inaugurated a week-long state-level Kannada book fair organized by the Kannada Book Authority (KBA) at Nehru Maidan on Oct 24, Sunday. The fair, which is the biggest Kannada book exhibition in Karnataka, is also the first of its kind in the state.

KBA Chairman Dr. Siddalingaiah said that the book fair has been organized with the purpose of introducing renowned Kannada writers, their thoughts, and their ideologies to the common people. He added that it is meant to be a meeting point for writers, book vendors, and readers. He also expressed his gratefulness to the state government for extending full support to the KBA.

Over 30,000 books have been displayed on a grand platform. Eighty-seven book sellers and publishers have set up around 120 stalls. The exhibition will be open for public viewing from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. till the end of October.

A wide range of Kannada books, including guides for students on a variety of subjects, children’s books, biographies, self-development books, books on religion, yoga, diet, health, music therapy, physical fitness, Internet, and cooking, as well as Tulu, Beary, and Konkani books written in the Kannada script. Biographies of Mahatma Gandhi, B. R. Ambedkar, Mother Theresa, Swami Vivekananda, Fidel Crasto, Jyothi Basu, Vallabhai Patel, Saleem Ali, Kuvempu, Dr. Allama Iqbal, Shivaram Karanth, and others are available.

Widely acclaimed publishers, universities, the Department of Kannada and Culture, Kannada Sahithya Parishad, as well as Tulu, Konkani, Kodava, and Beary academies are offering their publications at heavy discounts ranging from 10 – 30 percent.

Cultural programmes and writer interaction programmes will also be conducted as part of the exhibition.

MLC Ganesh Karnik, MLA Yogish Bhat, MLA U. T. Khader, Additional DC Prabhakar Sharma, litterateur Yerya Laxminarayana Alva, and others were present during the inauguration.
