In his acceptance speech, Padma Bhushan Julio Ribeiro said, “The poor and the weaker sections of the society are the ones most impacted by corruption. I appreciate BASF’s initiative to sensitize youth to fight the ills of corruption in India. I am happy to be part of this crusade and hopefully look forward for its realization amongst the youth.”

Lamenting the presence of so many scams in modern India, he said that they have reduced the tolerance level of people. He urged people to oppose corruption and bad governance and bravely say that corruption is unacceptable. If the men at the top are corrupt, the officials working under his supervision will also become corrupt, he said.

Lokayukta Justice N. Santhosh Hegde, the chief guest of the event, said that controlling corruption and helping the needy are our responsibility and declared that he has fulfilled his duty by honoring such a great personality.

He also said that the Lokayukta and the BASF have a common agenda, that of fighting corruption. Every one talks about corruption and the corrupt people, but when asked about what they have done to stop it, nobody answers, he said.  He said, “We hear about scams after scams from Delhi to Karnataka and our leaders speak of discussing it in Parliament by punishing them, but still cannot find a solution.”

Although the government has not reached the doorstep of the people, corruption has reached each and every doorstep, he said and added that India ranks 87th among 164 countries recognized for transparency in government work; but unfortunately it ranked 72nd four years back.

Concluding his speech, he said, “In the long run, we aim to influence and motivate young minds to set right the corrupt practices and improve governance standards in all walks of life. Initiatives like BASF’s “Good Governance” Icon Series, introduced by Corporate India, will help draw inspiration from these real-life performers in facing difficult odds and fighting against corruption in India.”
