Nitte University confers degrees on 70 PG students

Mangalore, Aug 23, 2011 : Degrees were conferred on around 70 PG students during the first annual convocation of Nitte University on Monday by Nitte University Chancellor N. Vinay Hegde.

A total of 43 masters of pharmacy students, 24 nursing students, and 3 pharmacy students received their degree certificates. The doctor of science degree was conferred on Dr. Georg H. Netwig, the chairman of the department of oral surgery at Frankfurt University, in absentia.

Addressing the students, Chancellor Hegde said that education is a never-ending process, which will continue even after students get their degrees.

M. Veerappa Moily, the minister for corporate affairs, was supposed to deliver the convocation address, but was absent because of certain developments at the centre. In his absence, Rajashekar, the registrar of Nitte University, read out the convocation address.

According to this address, there are 450 universities and 22,500 colleges in India, of which 300 are medical colleges, 291 are dental colleges, 600 are pharmacy colleges, and 1,233 are nursing colleges. Annually, 34,000 MBBS graduates and 13,500 post graduates pass from these colleges, but only 1000 super specialists pass. In spite of the large number of students passing from medical, pharmacy, and nursing colleges, the population of India does not get the required health facilities and India faces a shortage of health workers. It concluded by urged young medical professionals to serve the large number of people in rural areas with top quality health services.

Uchil Deepika Vijaykumar bagged the first place in pharmacy followed by Rajalekshmi M. and Jani Vishal Maheshkumar bagged the second and the third place, respectively. Shely P. Jose bagged the first place in the nursing faculty while Sharon Vincent won the second place and the third place was simultaneously bagged by Swapna Sukumaran and Sherin Sara Eapen. Jinit Kapadia bagged the first place in the physiotherapy faculty.

Dr. Shantharam Shetty, the vice chancellor of Nitte University, and other members of the faculty were also present.
