mescomMangalore, Apr 8, 2012: The Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (Mescom) has launched a project to identify ways to reduce consumption of power through the use of energy-efficient pumps. According to Vijay Narasimha, the MD of Mescom, the company is the first to initiate such a project.

Mr. Narasimha further said that irrigation pump sets will be replaced with energy-efficient pump sets through private participation. In other words, the energy-efficient pump sets will be installed by a private company and the cost of power saved through these pump sets will be shared between the private company and Mescom as per a pre-determined ratio.

Mescom has already installed electronic meters at Kabaka in Puttur and Manai in Udupi to find out the feasibility of this scheme. The meters will collect data indicating the quantity of power consumed, usage patterns and other essential data that will help engineers determine if the project is technically feasible.

The data so collected with the analyzed within six months. The collection of data commenced last December, and once Mescom determines the feasibility of the project, it will approach private companies. Stating that the Bachat Lamp Yojana attracted a lot of interest initially, Mr. Narasimha said that private companies lost interest when the tenders were floated, owing to which the company intends to approach private companies, understand their degree of interest, and carefully ascertain the advantages and disadvantages of this project.
