Mangaluru: Reactivated jail jammer disrupts mobile network in surrounding areas, public inconvenienced

Mangaluru, June 20, 2025: The mobile jammer at the Mangaluru District Jail, which had remained non-functional for nearly a month following damage during an inmate scuffle, has now been repaired and reactivated. However, its reinstallation has once again disrupted mobile network connectivity in nearby areas, inconveniencing both residents and local businesses.

The jammer was damaged during a violent clash between prisoners on May 20. In its absence, locals and shopkeepers had experienced a rare spell of uninterrupted mobile network access—something unusual given the typically strong signal-blocking effect of the device.

The matter was raised during a recent visit to the jail by Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara, who, reportedly dismayed by the situation and the associated security lapses, directed jail officials to carry out the repairs without affecting the public.

Despite this directive, residents and traders in the vicinity say mobile signals have once again been severely impacted. Complaints of frequent call drops and poor internet connectivity have resurfaced, suggesting that the minister’s instructions to minimize public disruption may have gone unheeded.
