Mangalore vows to fight crime against women ; hundreds take part in silent march

Mangalore , Jan 25, 2013  : A huge inflatable  pink slipper symbolizing collective strength and courage to fight against atrocities on women, was the centre of attraction at a silent march  participated by hundreds of  students and members of the general public in Mangalore on January 24.

The silent march taken out from Ambedkar Circle to Ladies Club, Balmatta saw  students from St Aloysius, St Agnes institutions, social activists and members of Lions Club taking part actively.

 

 

 

The huge pink slipper was prepared by Arthur of Hungary and Tillie of France. The silent march was to seek justice for Nirbhaya and other victims of crime against women.

People lit candles and pledged to fight against atrocities on women and to help them secure justice. There were skits and songs which conveyed the message to the gathering.

Oscar Fernandes who addressed the gathering,  said punishment to perpetrators of atrocities on women was  not the only solution to the problem. There is much more than that need to be done to check crime against women, he added.

Flavia Agnes, women’s activist, who too spoke  said the Delhi rape case has enlightened the society  on a grave issue  and  said the  media too has been providing unprecedented space for the issue in the recent times.

She hoped the mass protests being held against atrocities on women across the nation, may bring about  change  in the patriarchal mindsets of our leaders and law enforcement agencies.

 

  Dr Derek Lobo, Mayor  Gulzar Banu, former MP Vinay Kumar Sorake, social activist  Vidya Dinkar, Sandeep Malani, and others were present.
