Mangalore traffic police to receive Blackberry devices

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, April 2, 2012 : The Mangalore Police Commissionerate will soon receive new Blackberry devices, which will be used by the traffic police to issue penalty slips, eliminating the need for carbon paper and penalty challans.

traif 1The system of Blackberry Assisted Traffic Rules Enforcement, which is very successful in Bangalore, will soon be implemented in Mangalore. Each Blackberry device will be online and connected to a central server, enabling traffic police to access the database of those who violate traffic rules and their offence history just by inputting their license numbers. This system will help traffic police penalize habitual violators of traffic rules accordingly.

Speaking about the system, Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said that these devices will lead to transparency. The present system is to use offline challan machines, but the Blackberry devices will register the offence instantly in the central server as they are online. This enables the traffic police to get the offenders previous record, if any, and penalize him/her accordingly.

Number codes will be allotted to each number code and when the traffic police hits this number in the device, the challan gets printed instantly through a printer connected to a Bluetooth device. This will prevent anyone from tampering with the penalty amount as it will be entered previously into the device.

The devices will be distributed among traffic assistant sub inspectors, police inspectors, and others. The police personnel who are to receive these devices are being identified at present, he said.

Mr. Singh said that the department will receive 20 devices to start with and the traffic police will be trained on their use.
