Mangalore, Jan 16,2013: Some under trials lodged in the Mangalore sub-jail are reportedly on a hunger strike on January 16, Wednesday  to protest against the poor quality food served to them.

subjail 1But what has been gathered is that the prisoners who were annoyed over the late night raid by a police team, on Tuesday, were now staging a protest.

Jailor Vijay Kumar Chauhan  said “ Underworld don Rasheed Malabari who is behind the bars, has instigated one group of around 60 to 70 prisoners to stage a hunger strike.”

The jailer said “A raid was conducted earlier in the day on Tuesday following information that Malabari was in possession of weapons and ganja. As only three mobile phones were found, a second raid followed late in the night which might have frustrated the prisoners,” he said.

It is learnt, even the jailed journalist Naveen Soorinje has joined the protest.
Sources said the protestors have refused to budge until they spoke to the DC or the District Magistrate.  The DC however is busy as state governor is on a visit to the city.
