Mangalore, Dec 16,2012: The sacrifices made by the Indian armed forces were remembered during the Vijay Diwas programme observed at the War Memorial at Kadri in Mangalore on December 16, Sunday under the aegis of the Dakshina Kannada District Ex-Servicemen’s Association. The Day is being observed in commemoration of India’s historic win over Pakistan in the India-Pak war of 1971.
Wreaths were laid at the War Memorial by the chief guests and dignitaries including Pratap Reddy, IGP Western Range, Manish Kharbikar, Mangalore Police Commissioner, Dr Nidarsh Hegde, District Home Guards Commandant,MB Sadashiv, Lions District Governor,retd col. Nitteguttu Sharath Bhandary and GV Subrahmaniam,Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic).
Students and teachers from various institutions in Mangalore as well as NCC cadets and a large number of public attended the programme.
Worth mentioning here is that the highest military honour Parama Veera Chakra had been awarded to Lance Naik Albert Ekka (14 Guards), Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal (17 Poona Horse) and Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon (18 Squadron Indian Air Force), posthumously for the valour exhibited by them during the war, while Colonel Hoshiar Singh Dahiya (3 Grenadiers) was conferred the Award non-posthumously.
