Mangalore, Feb 4, 2013: The Kadri police along with officials of the Department of Women and Child Welfare raided the Ashraya Rehabilitation Centre at Nantur on the night of February 3, Sunday following complaints by locals that the centre owner harassed and tortured the inmates.All the 22 inmates of the Centre were later shifted to Wenlock Hospital.
As per reports, the public who noticed the Centre owner Upendra Naik assaulting a girl who tried to jump over the wall and escape, had informed the police. It is said the inmates have informed the raiding team that Upendra Naik not only ill-treated them but also made them starve.
According to locals, a girl had climbed the compound wall and ran away but before locals could enquire her, the centre owner had rushed and had taken away the girl. It is alleged that the owner used to ill-treat the girl.
Local residents said that a girl had also escaped from this centre a year ago following which the police had visited the spot and warned the management of the centre.
The police, it is learnt, had failed to register a complaint then demanding evidence to prove the allegations.
The Centre had 22 inmates including men and women.
