Mangalore: Malaria, Dengue Awareness drive from June 10 to 18

Mangalore, June 8, 2013: The Mangalore City Corporation will be conducting a Malaria and Dengue Awareness campaign from June 10 to 18.

 

Informing this to reporters here, MCC Joint Commissioner Srikanth Rao said  as many as 600 students from 21 nursing colleges in the city will be part of the campaign and will  make a door-to-door visit to sensitize the public on  the precautionary measures to be taken against the spread of the diseases. They will also enlighten the public on the symptoms of the disease.

 As part of the campaign mosquito breeding spots will be identified and steps would be taken to eradicate the same, he said.

Srikanth Rao said the MCC officials have conducted a survey of construction sites and added that out of the 383 sites surveyed, 104 had mosquito breeding spots. Notices have been served to six buildings which had  many mosquito breeding spots, he said adding violation of the directive may even lead to cancellation of licences of builders.

The officer informed that 1,560 cases of malaria and 42 cases of dengue were reported in the MCC limits from January 2013 and added no deaths were however reported.

MCC Health Officer Dr Sudarshan said that seven blood testing units had been set-up in the city limits at Lalbagh, Lady Hill, Jeppu, Wenlock, Bengre and district laboratory. He stated that additional six units would be set-up soon at Kadri, KSRTC bus stand, Panjimogaru, Kunjathbail and Kavoor. The officer also stated that all private hospitals and labs have been asked to notify the MCC whenever any malaria or Dengue case is detected.

 He also sought the co-operation of the public in controlling the spread of vector-borne diseases.
