Mangalore, Sep 2, 2013 : There has now arisen an obstacle for the election of Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation.
Though the process of choosing a mayoral candidate was on in the Congress no sooner the reservations were announced, there is now a stumbling block with JD(S) corporator from Kudroli ward Azeez Kudroli moving the High Court challenging the reservation of the Mayoral post for a general category lady candidate.
The big question however is why a JD(S) candidate who can in no way influence the election of mayor has resorted to such a move. The argument of Azeez is that the post has been reserved for women three times in the last six years.
Already, the date of election of Mayor has been fixed at September 12 and the process has been initiated. All corporators have been issued notices to attend the meeting. Meanwhile, the Congress has scheduled to conduct a meeting on September 8 to decide on its mayoral candidate.
The hearing into the writ filed by Azeez is to be held on September 3.Everything will now depend on the High Court ruling and the writ filed in Mangalore will affect all other city corporations where the reservation is announced on rotation basis.
The Mysore City Corporation mayor election is scheduled for September 5.
