Mangalore, May 22, 2013 : Several dignitaries including Forest Minister B Ramanatha Rai, Health Minister UT Khader and former MLA Yogish Bhat paid their last respects to veteran athlete and former national sprint champion Anand Shetty (52) who succumbed to injuries in a road accident on May 21, Tuesday. Shetty’s mortal remains was placed at Mangala Stadium to enable people to pay their last respects.
Shetty who was seriously injured in a road accident at Kotekar on May 18, Saturday, had died at a private hospital on May 21, Tuesday.
Anand Shetty who hailed from Maani in Bantwal taluk, had reigned in the athletic field for seven years. In the 1982 national sports meet held at Mangala Stadium, Shetty had won gold in 100 and 200 meters race. He had even represented India in the Asian Games held in New Delhi in 1982.
If at all there was an international athlete who was also a Kambala jockey, then it was probably Anand Shetty alone.
Among other prominent men who paid their last respects to the departed athlete included athletes Vandana Shanbag, Rohit Kumar Kateel, body builder Raymond D’Souza., Dr Mohan Alva, Chairman of Alva’s Foundation, Tejomaya, former MUDA Chairman and Sadananda Shetty.
