Mangalore : Fisherwomen resist dist. administration moves to distribute cloth bags

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Dec 3, 2012: For a moment it seemed as if the agitated fisher women intended to present a farewell gift to outgoing Deputy Commissioner Dr Channappa Gowda, by protesting against the plastic ban.

The scene was quite confusing at the fish market in State Bank area of Mangalore on December 3, Monday when a team of officials led by the Deputy Commissioner arrived. The officials  had planned  to distribute cloth bags in order to sensitize the fisher women  on plastic ban and encourage them to minimize the use of plastic bags.

As the district administration officials were about to distribute the cloth bags, the fisherwomen who were already agitated over the plastic ban, expressed their anguish by  taking the officials to task.

The efforts of the officials to convince the fisherwomen  on the usefulness of the ban proved futile and the latter burnt the cloth bags as a mark of protest.
