Mangalore, Jan 21,2013: The centenary celebrations of the St Sebastian Church at Bendore in Mangalore was inaugurated at a colourful ceremony held on January 20, Sunday to coincide with the annual feast of St Sebastian. Fr Henry D’Souza, Bishop of Bellary, celebrated the festival mass. The theme of the centenary celebrations is ‘Towards deeper faith and fostering brotherhood.’
Presiding over a function held in this connection, Fr Henry D’Souza stressed the need to foster values that promote brotherhood and amity in the society. Values must be upheld and promoted first within the family, he said and added this would result in developing a good community and a cultured society.
The Bishop of Bellary also presented the cup to the ‘Lotus zone” of the parish which won the championship in the various competitions conducted by the parish to mark the centenary. Zenia zone and Jasmine zone bagged the second and third places respectively.
Fr Henry Sequeira, Chancellor of Mangalore Diocese, who participated in the function on behalf of the Mangalore Bishop, inaugurated the Centenary logo. Balloons were simultaneously released in the air. The fireworks and Harry’s Band added grandeur to the festivities.
The Medical Fund that has been launched as a centenary year programme was also inaugurated by Fr Sequeira. Volunteers collected donations from the gathering for the Fund and the same was stored in a ‘baan’ placed at the venue.
Ronald Francis Walder, Vice President of the Parish spoke on the objectives of the institution of a medical fund.
Sr Welberta B S, Mother Superior of Bethany Convent, Fr Antony Michael Serrao, Parish Priest of St Sebastian Church also spoke.Assistant Parish Priests of Bendore Fr Paul Crasta, Fr John Baptist, Ronald Walder and several others were on the dais.
The Parish Choir rendered the Centenary song ‘Geet hen Bendore Firguzgaranchen, jublevacha ullasak gavnchen.’A variety of cultural programmes were also presented.
