Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Jan16,2013 : In what could be termed as a major blow to the Mangalore City Corporation which has been working vigorously towards implementing the plastic ban in the city, the State High Court, on January 15, Tuesday,  has stayed the ban on plastic imposed by MCC.

platic 1The stay comes in the backdrop of a petition filed by the Canara Plastic Manufacturers and Suppliers Union  seeking revoking of the ban order. The argument put forth by the Union  was that plastic bags above 40 microns thickness could be manufactured sold and  used and only bags of less than 40 microns thickness are banned as per the Plastic Waste(Management and Handling) rules.

Citing the above reason, the Union urged the  court to  allow manufacture of plastic of above 40 microns thickness, informed BA Nazir, President of the Canara Plastic Manufacturers and Suppliers Union.

It may be mentioned here that the MCC which has imposed a total ban on plastic carry bags, plates cups and other plastic items from November 1 onwards last year.

It has also been conducting raids on several business establishments which continued to use  the banned plastic bags.
