Maid arrested for stealing gold worth Rs. 3.5 lakh

Udupi, Aug 31, 2012 : The police arrested a female servant for stealing gold ornaments worth Rs. 3.5 lakhs from the house of her employer.

 

 

The servant had stolen gold ornaments worth Rs. 3.5 lakhs from the house of her employer Shashidhar Hegde, an entrepreneur, on the night of August 29, Wednesday. The house is located near Alive Kodi Beach in Thenka Yermal. A family of six, including Shashidhar’s sister Sumathi and her husband Shekhar Shetty, live in that house.

The accused Basamma Ramanna (35) of Bagalkot stole 18.5 sovereigns of gold plus Rs. 2000 cash. She has now been remanded to judicial custoday.

Shashidhar was about to go to bed after having dinner and watching TV for sometime, when he noticed that some valuables have been stolen.

He immediately informed the police; and Shivanand Valikar, circle inspector for Padubidri, SI Mahadeva Shetty, and other police officers arrived to investigate the theft.

The maid confessed on the morning of Thursday when she was being interrogated by the Deputy Superintendent of Police Jayanth Shetty. She also returned all the gold and money she had stolen. Reportedly, Shashidhar Hegde had employed her a year back and the family had grown to trust her.

The Padubidri police have registered a case.
