Mangalore, Oct 2, 2011: The 142nd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, was celebrated in the city, with various social, political, and religious leaders offering floral tributes to portraits and statues of the Mahatma all over the city. A number of events were organized in honor of Mahatma Gandhi.
Rally
The Mangalore City Corporation, the National Service Scheme of Mangalore University, and Rotaract Club Mangalore jointly organized an anti narcotics and anti corruption awareness rally.
The rally was inaugurated by Rohini K., the district information officer, at 8:30 a.m. near PVS Circle. A number of students participated in this march, which ended in front of the Mangalore City Corporation building. Praveen Anchan, the mayor of MCC, placed a garland on the statue of the Mahatma.
Freedom fighter felicitated
Dr. Ammembala Balappa, the freedom fighter, was honoured by the Bharath Seva Dal after the flag was hoisted in front of the Town Hall. He was honoured with a Gandhi cap and a Khadi shawl, after which all the other guests received a Gandhi cap each.
NMPT celebrations
The New Mangalore Port Trust organized a special event at the Port Trust Hospital, where Chairman Dr. P. Tamilvanan placed a garland on the portrait of the Mahatma in the presence of T. S. N. Murthy, the deputy chairman, HODs, trade union leaders, and senior port officers.
Fruits were also distributed among the patients in the Port Trust Hospital.
