MUDA chairman suggests land pooling for land acquisition

MUDA chairman suggests land pooling for land acquisition

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, July 22, 2012: Speaking at an event called Vision for Mangalore 2021 held at St. Aloysius College on July 20, Friday, Ramesh S., chairman of the Mangalore Development Authority (MUDA), said that the concept of land pooling could be used to acquire land for the proposed Mangala Corniche Project.

Explaining the land pooling concept, he said that this method allows landowners to surrender undeveloped parts of their land for the project. The government will then construct the road and provide the required infrastructure, following which the value of the land beside the road will increase. The owner can then either sell the land or develop it.

Regarding the proposed Mangala Corniche project, he said that it will be 32 kms long and requires around Rs. 8000 to Rs. 10,000 crore for completion. Although he did not reveal many details regarding the project, he called it a “water body improvement project.”

Further, he said that MUDA has proposed the construction of a multi-level parking lot in Hampankatta on a 2.15 acre plot. If successfully completed, this parking lot can accommodate 1000 cars. Stating that Mangalore is the second fastest growing city in the state, he urged people to cooperate with all these development projects.

The input session was followed by an interactive session, during which a student pointed out the Mangalore does not even have proper storm water drains and footpaths. Another student pointed out that, although the government has implemented a drainage network in Mangalore after taking a loan from the Asian Development Bank, it has failed to connect houses to the network.
