MSEZL effluent pipeline work re-commences at Mukka

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, May 8, 2012 : Police provided heavy security to MSEZ workers when work on the laying of the effluent pipeline in Mukka re-commenced. Heavy equipment required to lay the undersea effluent pipeline for Mangalore Special Economic Zone Limited (MSEZL) was unloaded at Mukka with the help of cranes. The company appears to be relieved that the local community of traditional fishermen has decided to stop protesting against the project. Work on the pipeline is proceeding in a smooth and peaceful manner.

mukkha 1Traditional fishermen had been dead against the laying of the effluent pipe on grounds that it will cause pollution and destroy marine life. The work, which was in its first phase, had to be stopped because of these protests.

The MSEZ, however, has succeeded in convincing the fishermen that its project will have no adverse effects on their profession. In fact, MSEZ had to convince the fishermen twice as they rose against the company in protest two times.

Meanwhile, the people of Athrebailu and Melukoppala are fiercely protesting against the dumping of mud in River Phalguni by MSEZ workers in the course of constructing a road. The company is having a tough time pacifying the protestors in this case.

Local people had begun protesting right from the day the company began cutting the road to lay the pipeline in Chelyaru, Pedre, and Padupadavu. Since the contractors managed to convince the people, about 75 percent of the work is completed.

However, the fishermen of Mukka are yet to approve the laying of the pipeline. On Monday, heavy police security was provided to MSEZ workers who were busy with the project.
