Mangaluru, Oct 1, 2026: Condoling the death of worker Manish Karkada in the tragic accident at MRPL, hundreds of workers staged a protest in front of the company’s Cargo Gate on Thursday. The workers observed a moment of silence and paid tribute to the deceased.
During the protest, labour unions submitted a list of demands to the MRPL management. They sought Rs 1 crore compensation for the family of the deceased and permanent employment for one of his family members.
The unions also demanded comprehensive health insurance for all MRPL workers and called for the immediate implementation of stronger workplace safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
MLA Umanath Kotian, Satyajit Suratkal, Bharath Raj Krishnapura, Prashanth Moodakodi and other leaders were present at the protest. The demands were formally submitted in the presence of MLA Kotian, following which the delegation held a meeting with MRPL officials.
According to the unions, the MRPL officials assured them that the demands would be considered and fulfilled. The officials also reportedly assured the delegation that safety protocols would be strengthened and greater priority would be given to the safety and welfare of workers.
