MCC to launch property tax collection drive from today

Mangalore Feb 1, 2013  : Mangalore City Corporation Commissioner Harish Kumar has said that the MCC would be launching a 15-day property tax and water cess collection drive from February 1 and that  intends to collect arrears from 8000 defaulters.

Speaking at the MCC Council meeting held on January 31, Thursday, he said  the drive aims at registering 100 per cent progress in tax collection. He said  the MCC has at present registered 60 per cent  progress in property tax collection. He said notices have been served to the defaulters and that the MCC team would make a spot visit and collect the pending amount.



He said, if taxes were still not paid, then in the next phase, the information of the defaulters would appear in media and on notice boards  and as a last option there would be the drum-beating method when the names of the defaulters would be announced in public.


Earlier, ruling BJP corporators wanted to know as to why the MCC has suspended the Operation Tiger  since the past one year. The Commissioner, clarifying on the issue said the drive was suspended   as the state government has not yet finalized regulations in this regard. 


The Commissioner also said that the MCC would think of eviction of footpath vendors once alternate arrangements are made. He also referred to the MCC plans of issuing ID cards to the vendors and creation of vending and non-vending zones.


Replying to a query if the city will have to face water problem this summer, the Commissioner assured that the city may not have to face acute water shortage this summer as during the previous years.


  Encroachment of roadside land by some builders on the pretext of beautifying the city, also came up for discussion at the meeting.


Mayor Gulzar Banu, Deputy Mayor Amitha Kala were present.
