MCC to draw 6MGD water from Lakhya Dam through KIOCL pipeline

Mangalore, April 4, 2012 : Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited (KIOCL) has expressed willingness to give its 67-km pipeline from Lakhya Dam to Panambur to the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) so that the civic body can draw 6MGD water per day from Lakhya Dam for the people of the city.

Revealing the above information to reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony of the Sakala Scheme in the district, Harish Kumar K., the commissioner of MCC, said that the KIOCL was maintaining this pipeline as its corporate social responsibility and wrote a letter expressing willingness to hand it over to the civic body on March 21.

He said that 2.5MGD of the 6MGD can be drawn by gravitational pull and the rest can be pumped as the KIOCL already has the facilities to do so in Kudremukh.

Regarding the closing of KIOCL mining operations in Kudremuch, a case pending in the Supreme Court, the civic body intends to implead itself to seek permission to draw water from Lakhya Dam.

Speaking on the occasion, N. Yogish Bhat, the deputy speaker of the state assembly, said that he had raised the issue of using water in the Lakhya Dam for the city of Mangalore in assembly and expressed hopes that the government will move the Supreme Court green bench and implead itself.

Mr. Bhat also said that he had raised the issue of the delay in constructing a new dam at Thumbe in assembly.
