Mangalore, October1: Mayor Rajani Dugganna said that she will remove the core committee, which has been constituted as the final authority to sanction civic works. This committee was constituted last month after a meeting chaired by District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar, DC V. Ponnuraj, and MLA Yogish Bhat.

The committee has angered the MCC, which has labeled the panel as an extra-constitutional body and urged its dissolution. The officials have also strongly reacted against the powers given to this committee to approve the MCC’s decisions. During the monthly council meeting, the MCC members gave vent to their fury.

While a furious Shashidhar Prasad questioned the existence of this committee, Mariamma Thomas wanted to know whether a non statutory body was required when the MCC already had 4 standing committees to ensure its smooth functioning.  Harinath, Ashraf, and Thilakraj also voiced similar opinions and proposed the dissolution of the committee.

Shankar Bhat, the former mayor and BJP member, explained the background of the committee and said that it was formed with good intent.

Later, the mayor assured the members that the committee will be dissolved after consultation with the District-in-charge minister, local MLAs, and deputy commissioner. Agreeing with the members that the committee was non statutory, she said that it was formed after allegations of bias in assigning projects.
