Mangalore, Dec 20, 2012: The Mangalore City Corporation meeting held on December 19, Wednesday witnessed an interesting debate among members over the issue of the ‘failure’ of the MCC in clearing some encroachments by builders.
Raising the issue, Corporator Mariamma Thomas blamed the builders lobby for coming in the way of the MCC authorities in clearing illegally encroachments of roads. While saying so, Mariamma Thomas was referring to a builder who had encroached a road to facilitate a lawn, in turn causing inconvenience to members of the public. She pointed out that the MCC has so far not taken any action.
This led to some heated debate between ruling and opposition corporators and finally MCC Commissioner Harish Kumar clarified on the issue by stating that the road where the encroachment had taken place came under the control of the National Highway Authority.
The meeting also saw a debate on the increasing plastic wastes in Mangalore despite the ban on plastics. Several corporators including Harinath, Jayanthi said plastic wastes are thrown on roadsides in some places where the garbage bins have been removed. The MCC authorities have failed to initiate remedial measures, they alleged.
Reacting to these complaints, Commissioner Harish Kumar said though door to door garbage collection has been introduced in some places, in some other places it is yet to begin.
The meeting was chaired by Mayor Gulzar Banu.
