Mangalore, July 2, 2012: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) conducted raids on hostels and paying guest (PG) facilities in Bejai and Kodialbail on July 2, Monday.
The MCC team raided three hostels in Kodialbail and one hostel in Bejai. They intended to raid Besant Hostel too, but found it closed.
Since a girl student staying in the hostel of Expert PU College had recently died of dengue, the team raided this hostel and found that the college was running it without a proper license. Moreover, the kitchen was constructed in the parking lot. The MCC team warned the management to maintain cleanliness in the premises if they wanted to continue running the hostel.
The team then raided A ‘n’ Z paying guest facility, which is located on the first floor of a building in Bejai. They found that the hygienic conditions of the PG were very poor. They found that RK Residency in Kodialbail was also in an unhygienic state.
The team refrained from sealing the PGs and hostels because students were staying there, but they warned the owners to improve the situation there.
According to MCC sources, the MCC conducted raids on PGs and hostels according to a decision taken at the recent MCC council meeting. The team especially targeted hostels run by people paying domestic tax and those rumored to lack proper space, ventilation, and hygienic conditions.
The MCC team also said that students staying in hostels and PGs and exhibiting symptoms of dengue and malaria will have to undergo medical examination.
