MCC budget presented in the midst of opposition

Mangalore, Mar 30, 2012: Gulzar Banu, the mayor of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), presented the budget for 2012 – 13 even in the midst of disturbances, arguments, and walkouts on the part of the BJP. 

Shankar Bhat, the BJP corporator, said that the budget session should be postponed till the high court delivers its verdict on the validity of the election of Gulzar Banu to the post of mayor, but the mayor said that Shantha, the BJP corporator for Panjimogeru, can present the budget. Clearly, the BJP corporators objected to this and there was a quarrel among the corporators, who began verbally abusing one another. The council was then adjourned for ten minutes.

At the beginning of the next session, corporator Shantha said that she would not present the budget as most of the house was against it. The BJP then walked out of the session. 

The budget, however, was presented. Rs. 3 crore has been earmarked for the construction of a dam near Thumbe to solve the city’s water problem and Rs. 1.75 crore will be spend on repairing the drainage systems in the city. The budget also promises Rs. 25 lakhs to each ward for the repair of roads, footpaths, and drains.
