MCC Commissioner Invites School Students To Feel The City

Mangalore, November 16, 2010: In view of better understanding of the city and create awareness on the day to day happenings in the City Corporation, the Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation Dr. K N Vijayaprakash has invited the school children for a tour around the city and come up with their own model of a growing city.

Interacting with high school students during Insignia Jr., a district level Student Leadership Development Programme, organized by the Students Action Movement (SAM), the high school wing of Centre for Integrated Learning (CIL) at the Canara High School in the city on Sunday, the commissioner promised that he would facilitate a student delegation comprising of two kids from each school to take them around the city so as to appraise them of the various issues that are faced by the Mangalore City.

The day-long event featured various sessions on leadership effectiveness along with interactive sessions to sensitise the high school students on civic issues.  Over 120 students drawn from about 20 institutions in the city participated in the programme, co-hosted by the Interact Club of Canara High School (Main).

During the interaction, Vijayaprakash acknowledged the fact that there were problems galore in the Corporation and that students could play a major role in influencing the citizens to seek a better tomorrow by raising their voice.

The students also had a unique opportunity to air their opinion and seek answers on the law and order situation In the city during an exclusive interaction session with the Commissioner of Police, Seemanth Kumar Singh. Singh, who is known to be a tough cop to handle any tense situation, exhibited all his softness to walked around the student gathering to explain the various aspects of law and order, crimes, traffic situations among other aspects under his control. He also exhorted the students to take up civil services examinations so as to take up careers in public administration.

Insignia Jr. was inaugurated by eminent orthodontist and former national president of Indian Dental Association Dr. U S Krishna Nayak who called on the students, especially the younger ones to open their eyes to the harsh realities of the world so that they can groom themselves to become responsible citizens of the country when they grew.

The other sessions during the day was facilitated by experts including Human Resource Development experts of the likes of Major Radhakrishna of MGM College, Udupi, Capt. Gopinath from Canara Pre-University College, Pushparaj K, a child psychologist from Kasargod and former journalist S Nandagopal.

The deliberations were conducted totally by high school students who are the members of SAM, which added a special flavour to the programme.
